Lost Dog

Today I found a lost dog in my neighborhood while taking a longer than usual route after my kiddo passed out in the stroller. This little black puppy popped up and was SO excited to get attention from us. I spent the entire day posting on Facebook, checking for a microchip, and then dreaming about what would happen if we couldn’t find her owners (we would name her Maisy, and she would be Bub’s best friends). In a bittersweet ending, her owners saw my post and were reunited.

As I reflected on the day, I realized that this had been one of my happiest days recently. I had a very clear purpose in finding the owners and/or taking care of this new puppy. It was new and different. I didn’t have time to scour the news, search for vaccination information or scroll through Facebook. I dropped the “less pressing” responsibilities to focus on this one.

Today was a really stark reminder that while being a mom is a huge part of my identity and purpose, it doesn’t need to be ALL my identity and purpose. It’s okay for me to want other roles — like crazy dog lady! It doesn’t take away from my love of my family if I want other things too.

Today I am Mom + Puppy Rescuer. What’s your Mom + _____ today?
